No one can guarantee absolute safety in the mountains, especially when faced with the subtle danger of avalanches. However, a practical approach, based on lessons learned from accidents, can significantly reduce the risk thanks to simple tools and methods adapted to everyone's expectations: from beginners to experts.
This text does not aim to expose "beautiful theories", but will help you make the right choices at the right time, depending on the level of your group and the information available. It is primarily intended for hikers on skis or snowshoes, but it is also aimed at mountaineers and off-piste enthusiasts, whether they move in their home mountains or explore distant lands. Numerous and detailed examples will help you recognize experienced situations and identify practical solutions. Providing many with the keys to discover the wild snow-covered mountain is also a way of breaking a lance in favor of the shared "beautiful risk" and the rediscovered pleasure, without fear.

Oliver Moret and Philippe Descamps both ran the editorial staff of Montagnes Magazine from 2000 to 2010, then took turns directing the Fondation Petzl. Olivier Moret is currently the secretary general of this foundation, whose main objective is the prevention of accidents in the mountains. Philippe Descamps is a journalist for the monthly Le Monde diplomatique. Previously, they coordinated the Montagne été technical handbook for the UIAGM-IFMGA, the International Union of Mountain Guides. Between them, they have completed over a thousand ski trips and dozens of raids in about twenty countries, from the coast of Norway to the Himalayan "7000" peaks.
