In this sequel to the award-winning Psycho Vertical, Andy Kirkpatrick continues to describe climbs, from the Alps to Patagonia and America, detailing his adventures and misadventures on the routes, the gear, the climbing partners, the tears, the successes and the defeats. Climbing is not the real focus of this captivating, sometimes exasperating, 2012 Boardman-Tasker Award-winning book.
The recurring theme is that of the tormented man and husband, always balanced between the tensions of normality. On the one hand, commitment, relationships, work, family and all the other things that make up a modern life; on the other, the complexities, despite the linear simplicity of life, and the risks that come with climbing on a large wall where you constantly climb "close to death".

Alongside these themes, Kirkpatrick's style develops, both in writing and in climbing. It is the unrealistic style of the "I'll try..." hero. Almost wallowing in his inadequacies, Andy accompanies us with his tales of recklessness, on the coldest sides of the mountains and of his psyche, trying to sublimate with extreme action his inability to sustain a normal life. Always ready to point out that he is not gifted with a climber's physique, Andy also confesses to us that he suffers from severe dyslexia. And yet here he is, a professional mountaineer, a brilliant writer who involves the reader with his style tinged with humor at times light, at times dark.
