A great mountain enthusiast since she was a young girl, after her experience as a doctor in charge of the first climbing competitions in Bardonecchia and her thesis on the muscular strength of the upper limb in climbers, her work as a sports doctor led Mirella De Ruvo to create a Sports Medicine Center, today a point of reference for mountain lovers and in particular for climbers. In this activity she constantly collaborates with Luca Colombo, a physiotherapist specialized in hand rehabilitation.
Together they wrote this manual, focused on the most frequent injuries related to the practice of this sport. With a bit of anatomy (very boring, but necessary to identify the structures involved) and a description of the most frequent pathologies and traumas (with their main signs and symptoms) they tried to provide some indications on how to recognize and understand them. The first question that climbers ask during a visit is when they can train and the second is what they should take. The treatments (drug therapies, physical therapies and physiotherapy) are not intentionally precise, both in type and dosage, because they must always be adapted to the individual climber (age, sex, years and level of climbing, previous pathologies, current therapies, etc.).
The purpose of this book is absolutely not to make the diagnosis and treatment yourself, but rather to better understand whether it is the case to reduce the training loads or observe a period of rest; or whether it is the case to contact a specialist doctor or a physiotherapist (perhaps also a climber, capable of understanding the movements of climbing), to receive a precise diagnosis that, at times, requires the execution of in-depth tests.Mirella De Ruvo is a surgeon, specialist in Sports Medicine. She wrote her specialization thesis: Applied Physiology: influence of climbing on muscle strength. Doctor of the first climbing competitions in Bardonecchia, since 1985 she has visited injured climbers from all over Italy. Since 2005 he has been the director of the De Ruvo Sports Medicine Center, above Lake Maggiore. He has been practicing amateur climbing since the age of 20.
Luca Colombo, physiotherapist and hand therapist, has been treating patients with hand injuries for over 10 years. He certified his experience by obtaining a Master's degree in hand rehabilitation at the University of Milan. He has been working at the De Ruvo Sports Medicine Center since 2006, the ideal place to combine his passions: sport and rehabilitation.
