L'Arte di sciare oltre le piste is a unique book, from many points of view. First of all because it proposes an organic technical-didactic system for ski mountaineering that addresses all the problems and situations peculiar to this discipline, from the techniques of ascent and descent, to the management of weight, body and skis, to breathing, in the different situations of snow and slopes. The author successfully applies the founding principles of the Caruso Method® - initially created for climbing - to ski mountaineering, thus demonstrating the universality of the concepts, but also of the approach underlying them.
Approach based on rigorous "scientific" bases (physical and anatomical) and on an observation without preconceptions of the problems presented by these disciplines, but also on decades of research during which the Caruso Method was developed and rigorously tested. The Art of Skiing is a manual, in the sense that it explains “how to” in a detailed and complete way, maintaining a practical and concise style that facilitates consultation and learning. This is also thanks to the impressive photographic collection that supports the understanding of the techniques and exercises proposed. In this sense it is a manual that is aimed at everyone, including blind skiers to whom 2 chapters are dedicated. But at the same time it is a “philosophy” of ski mountaineering practice and sport in general, aimed above all at those with the necessary passion and motivation. Unlike the Caruso Method®, “traditional” ski mountaineering manuals do not analyze the technique of movement, or refer to the texts “of ski instructors, as if there were no substantial differences in movement and therefore techniques” with the beaten track. But those who for the first time find themselves facing “fresh” snow in all its variations, on slopes of different inclinations, with a backpack on their shoulders, even with good preparation on the slopes, immediately understand that it is a different “game”. The classifications of curves by amplitude and frequency become secondary aspects compared to the need to remain standing, to move safely, saving strength, while managing to have fun and appreciate the movement on ungroomed snow. These are the goals of all ski mountaineers, regardless of their level and the difficulty of the itinerary. The skier’s ability to adapt in the best way to the snow conditions is the first safety factor in the mountains. How does the body shape change in different situations?
How do you learn to manage weight and movement to make the skis do the right thing at the right time?
And how do you know what the right thing is?
These are the questions that the author tries to answer with this new, impressive work. First, the “fundamental” principles are analyzed: the basic motor patterns, the use of the two centers of gravity and the shifting of weight, the distance between the skis, the various types of angles, the movement of the body downwards and upwards. Then the techniques and exercises peculiar to the Caruso Method ® are introduced, in a precise path aimed at improving above all the ability to “feel” the right movement, to understand the why of things, which puts man at the center of the picture. A manual, therefore, that goes beyond the innovative technical aspects of the ascent and descent to propose essential values of going to the mountains and touch on “deep” themes of movement, such as those that emerge from a new approach to teaching the blind.Paolo Caruso, Alpine guide, trainer and writer. As a young man he made numerous first ascents in mountaineering (as told in Giorni della grande pietra) of great importance such as Cavalcare la tigre e il Nagual e la Farfalla on Gran Sasso, clearly raising the limits of free climbing difficulty in this mountain group, the first winter ascent of Cerro Torre in Patagonia or the first ascent of Astroman in Yosemite. He also made first ascents on unclimbed peaks in Greenland and Wadi Rum. In the Sibillini Mountains he opened important new itineraries such as Comandante Massud, the Leone del Panshir and Dittatura Democratica. His great personal experience in mountaineering, climbing and ski mountaineering, together with his knowledge of oriental disciplines and his great passion for teaching, led him to create the first organic study of the technique of movement in mountain and climbing disciplines, known as the Caruso Method®, which currently constitutes the technical and didactic reference in the teaching of these disciplines for the Italian Alpine Guides, for the CAI and other associations in the sector, both in Italy and abroad. Since 2008, on behalf of the San Marino Alpine Club, he has directed IAMA - International Academy of Mountain Climbing, with the aim of promoting activities related to climbing and mountaineering according to authentic principles and values. www.metodocaruso.com, www.istruttori.org.
