The Stone of Dreams tells us about climbing in southern Italy. Thirty-three years after the series of trips to the South that culminated with the book/guide Mezzogiorno di Pietra, Alessandro Gogna has finally managed to get to grips with the memories of those years and the following ones, inserting them into the flow of time. The result is a personal book, full of episodes, portraits of great climbers, but also choral, with precious testimonies from those who lived those years as protagonists, even at very high levels.
They were years of research, of sporting improvement, of discussions on how and with what means, still certainly unresolved today. The result is a book with precious testimonies from those who lived those years as protagonists, such as Manolo and Marco Bernardi, and from those who took up the baton of discovery, such as Pietro Dal Prà, Maurizio Oviglia, Rolando Larcher, Roberto Vigiani and Massimo Flaccavento. In the meantime Roby Manfrè, Gabriele Beuchod and Ornella Antonioli, to whom this work is dedicated, left us. The illusion, sometimes so strong as to be almost real, that dealing with the adventures of others and delving into small mysteries is the only valid way to avoid lazing around in personal memories, has pushed the author to give the right weight to well-known and flagship enterprises, rebalancing it with that of the forgotten or almost unknown, without bowing to any fashion. An illusion that leads to believing that the dream is not yet over: and that the Stone of Dreams is like the philosopher's stone.
Alessandro Gogna is an internationally renowned mountaineer, mountain guide and historian of Italian mountaineering. A protagonist of cutting-edge mountaineering in the 70s, he has at least 150 first ascents in the Alps and other mountain ranges to his credit, as well as 3 expeditions to the Himalayas and Karakorum (Annapurna, Lhotse and K2). He has experienced and documented the evolution of mountaineering, from the great classic routes to climbing as a new form of movement as an end in itself. Publisher and writer, he was the founder and for years an active and driving member of Mountain Wilderness, of which he is still one of the international guarantors. Today he is the curator of the Gogna blog within www.banff.it.
